birch hill pullover & hat

After a few months of knitting, writing and sizing the patterns, and then working with test knitters to recreate the designs, I’m so pleased to share that the Birch Hill Pullover & Hat are being released today.

You will probably recall seeing this sweater on Jackson back in December, as I designed and knit it for his 5th birthday. Once I finished the sweater, I knew I wasn’t done with this particular cable and rib motif, so I created a matching hat for Nina.

Both designs feature the same Aran-inspired cables and garter rib fabric. The abundant texture definitely shows up best with a solid or semi-solid colorway. In my case, I had two different colorways of Madelinetosh Tosh DK in my yarn stash for a long time. It felt SO great to rediscover the skeins and bring them to life in these projects. Jackson’s sweater is worked in a cream/taupe/café latte neutral called “Fawn” and Nina’s hat is worked in a searingly bright (haha) neon pink called “Pop Rocks”!

The Birch Hill Pullover has a stylish, modern fit but also includes enough positive ease (between 0-2″) to fit a layer underneath. The body and sleeves are each knit in the round from the bottom up before being joined together in the round. The yoke features a compound raglan for a better fit and a generous crewneck to make getting dressed and undressed easier. The sweater is knit flat once the neck shaping begins. The hem, cuffs, and neckband all feature professional (and optional) tubular edges. And, as with any child’s garment, you should feel free to add a bit of extra length to the sleeves and body for growth spurts! (You can see that I took my own advice; Jackson’s sleeves are cuffed and the body hits his low hip, perfect for a couple years of wear.)

Here are a couple more shots in action at “the Lego table”!

The Pullover is sized for babies and children from ages 6 months all the way up to 12 years. You can purchase the Pullover pattern here on Ravelry or here at DCD! And if you use the coupon code “birchhill” thru midnight EST on 3/5/2020, you’ll get 25% off!

The great thing about this cable and rib motif (apart from its classic texture) is that it stretches so nicely, making it perfect for a hat. I included 4 sizes in the hat pattern to cover everyone from babies to large adult heads (*cough* myself *cough*) and you’ll want to choose a size approximately 2-3” smaller than your actual head circumference.  (Nina is wearing the child size with about 3″ of negative ease).

This unisex hat is worked in one piece in the round from the brim upward. Merino wool yarn creates a soft, warm fabric that brings this textured design to life, but any DK-weight yarn will work nicely.

Here’s a couple more photos from a chilly February evening with a beautiful sunset:

We’ve had several chilly days here on Long Island, and past years have shown that March is still very much a part of Winter, so I foresee lots more use of these 2 new pieces by the kiddos. Which is all any knitter/mama wants anyway 🙂

Happy knitting!

xoxo Danielle

  1. It’s a beautiful design, and I am certain Nina was delighted to wear her new hat. They are both adorable! Good job Mom! 🧡👍
