What better way to welcome September than with the release of a new knitting pattern? Created in collaboration with Hudson + West Co., this is Steadfast: a classic triangular wrap that’s cozy enough to see you through the transition from late summer to early fall.
Worked in fingering-weight yarn, Steadfast is the ideal transitional weather accessory. Ribbed cables create gentle vertical lines while columns of eyelet lace separate the cables and give the shawl a delicate feeling without sacrificing warmth. The overall effect of these textures is elegant but also simple and modern.
This triangular accessory is worked flat from the long cast on edge and decreased down to one stitch. The decreases are worked on both edges of every row and the edges are also finished to prevent curling. This is a charted pattern and once you’ve got the pattern established, you’ll find yourself working away with an intuitive ease.
Because of this combination of lace and cables, I think that the design works best with a smoothly spun fingering-weight yarn in either a solid or mostly-solid colorway. And that brings me to this special collaboration with the women of Hudson + West Co. Steadfast was knit in their Weld yarn using the “dusk” colorway, an enchanting neutral with both pink and brown tones.
Hudson + West Co. is the product of two talented and experienced fiber artists, Meghan Babin and Sloane Rosenthal. I first worked with Meghan when she was the editor of Interweave Knits. And I first met Sloane when I became a fan of her incredible cabled garment designs. (Many thanks to Sloane for modeling the wrap and to her husband for his photographs!)
Meghan and Sloane have teamed up to bring us two unique yarns that are grown, milled, and dyed entirely in the United States. The yarn comes in the fingering-weight “Weld,” which you see here, and a worsted-weight yarn, “Forge.” What I particularly appreciate about both of these yarns, apart from the intelligent way in which they are manufactured, is their ability to be both strong and light, crisp and durable but also airy. When you work with Forge or Weld, you are guaranteed to have a finished project with beautiful stitch definition, good fabric drape, and warmth without being bulky. And there’s a broad palette of colors to suit each crafter’s vision.
