cloud gathering cowl

Mid-February is definitely still Winter in this part of the world, so we haven’t put away our hats, mittens, or other warm accessories yet. And THAT means that there’s still plenty of time to knit and enjoy wearing my newest design: the Cloud Gathering Cowl! To celebrate the release, the pattern is 20% off through midnight EST on Tuesday, February 15th, no code needed!

Understated, but functional, elegance is the name of the knitting game here. At its heart, the Cloud Gathering Cowl provides abundant, timeless texture in the form of honeycomb cables and ribbed hems.

The ribbed hems are actually folded in half at the top and bottom of the cowl for extra warmth and a special bit of detail. For each hem, you whipstitch the cast-on or bound-off edge to the inside of the cowl. Because the inside half of each hem is a smooth stockinette fabric, you’re rewarded with a professional finish and a fun, new technique in your knitting repertoire. (And if you prefer, you can always whipstitch “live” stitches to the inside of the cowl for less bulk. This approach would require a provisional cast-on at the start.)

Best of all, that folded hem at the top of the cowl has another role: as the home of the i-cord drawstring that makes this cowl adjustable for maximum warmth in any weather!

I love how the drawstring feature allows you to alter the cowl to suit your style (and the weather)! Make the drawstring any length you like, but I went for a longer length to make it visible even if the cowl isn’t cinched at the top. Because even on sunnier days, this cowl still provides a gentle, warm hug.

Of course, it never hurts when your cowl is knit in Clinton Hill Cashmere’s Bespoke DK cashmere! This yarn is unparalleled for its combination of softness and warmth. It also imparts a heavenly halo to the finished fabric, which I thought only emphasized the sense of having gathered a handful of fluffy clouds around the neck and shoulders. This yarn comes in a wide array of neutral shades (I used “winter white”) as well as punchy brights. The pattern also provides gauge and yardage information if you’re using a different DK-weight yarn from your stash!

The Cloud Gathering Cowl pattern is now available here at Danielle Chalson Designs or here on Ravelry with 20% off through midnight EST on Tuesday, February 15th, no code needed!

Stay safe and keep knitting, wherever you are!
