neon moon mitts :: rhinebeck sale continues

You may remember this yarn, as it’s frankly kind of hard to forget! I used Catskill Merino’s Saxon Sport in “hot pink” to make a vest for my daughter back in the Spring. That design included a variety of cable patterns and lots of crocheted bobbles.

Since I had plenty of yardage left over, I decided to distill that design down into a quick and fun accessory that’s perfect to whip up for gift-giving season!

The mitts still have that whimsical bobble feature on the hand, and I added a simple honeycomb cable on either side to echo the circular shape of the bobbles. Please know, though, that the bobbles are entirely optional! As the pattern explains, you can just substitute a purl stitch for each of those bobbles and still have a lovely, intuitive cable pattern on the hand. (Further detail: these are crocheted bobbles because I prefer the smooth surface, but you can just as easily make a knitted bobble here, too!)

The top of the mitts showcase plenty of texture, so the underside of each mitt is worked in smooth stockinette for knitting ease as well as wearing comfort. The lower cuff is snug without being too tight, and it’s also long enough to tuck into a sweater or coat to chase the chill away when the cold weather arrives.

The pattern includes three adult sizes for yourself or your favorite gifting recipients, and the smallest size would definitely also work for teenagers. Best of all, you can easily knit a pair of mitts from only one cherished skein in your stash. For example, one pair of mitts requires between 100-130 yards of sport-weight yarn, and each of the Catskill Merino Saxon Sport skeins includes 175 yards! In my experience, this particular sport-weight yarn knits up at a heavier sport gauge, so you could also try working these mitts on a lighter DK-weight yarn, too.

So if you’re already embarking on gift knitting season, or you’re excited to stash dive to make something quick and fun for yourself, the Neon Moon Mitts are here to fit the bill. Don’t be surprised, either, to see me at Rhinebeck in these mitts in the chilly morning air (and please say hello)! Catskill Merino will also be there, showcasing their incredible merino yarns in a variety or weights and colors, so be sure to stop by their booth to learn more.

You can find the Neon Moon Mitts pattern here at DCD or here on Ravelry.

Reminder: from now until midnight EDT on Monday 10/21/2024, ALL of my self-published patterns, including Neon Moon, are 25% off with NO code needed!

And if you’re curious, here’s just a sampling of the 70+ other designs that are included in the sale:

Happy knitting season and Happy Rhinebeck! Wherever you are, have a cider donut (or three) for me 😉
xoxo Danielle

  1. Well, you’ve gone and done it again, and I have to agree, the hot pink mitts were the perfect companion piece for that gorgeous vest. And no one wants to leave such lovely yarn laying around and going unused. Great idea! And I’m sure Nina is happy with your design as well. 👍👍🤗
