mission: fair isle

With Autumn well and truly upon us, I thought I’d share a couple quick photos of my latest Makewise Designs project, which I am REALLY hoping to have finished, photographed, edited, AND released by the time Rhinebeck rolls around in just under two weeks! No pressure, right? (Eek!)

Meet my currently-unnamed fair isle cowl! Worked with two colors of Madelinetosh Sock in “Bare” and “Fjord,” this cowl is worked in the round with two oversized fair isle motifs for a fun and modern take on traditional colorwork.

I’m hoping to make this cowl long enough to loop around the head twice, hence my need to Get.Knitting.Faster if I’m going to meet my deadline 🙂

And here’s what is really fun about this project: the Fjord colorway itself is variegated, so the colorwork has tonal variations within it:

(Please excuse the fabric – it needs a seriously good steaming.) The design is worked in the round, which hides all of the yarn floats and makes this cowl super warm. The ends will be grafted together for a near-seamless result. We love those professional details, right?

As you can imagine, the gauge on this project is small, and many many rounds fit into just one inch, so I think it’s time that I stop typing and start knitting. After all, isn’t that what quiet Sundays are for? Happy weekend, all!
