made for each other: Annecy Beret & Scarf

Hello! It’s September! That summer sure went fast, didn’t it?? (Not that I’m complaining – we all know how I feel about hot weather vs. cool, lovely, crisp, Fall weather heh heh.)

September, for so many of us, still feels like the official “start” of the year – with school beginning or with sending kids to school for the first time or the twelfth time, and with the change in the seasons, it’s a great time to start something new. Knitters especially crave this season, as the prospect of knitting with wool in your hands seems like a joy and not a sweaty torture!

So here’s a fantastic project to get those knitting juices flowing again for a long Autumn and Winter ahead. As many of you recall, I released my Annecy Beret pattern last December, both here on the blog and at Knit Picks. The beret features chunky ribbing as well as some simple lace to create a plush, rich texture for a classic accessory. Well, a dear friend of my mother’s and a very loyal blog buddy of mine, Sandie, has designed a companion scarf!

Sandie’s niece currently lives in Germany, but will be moving to Alaska and is going to need every ounce of handknit warmth she can find, so Sandie had the brilliant idea to adapt the ribbing and lace pattern of the beret for a complementary scarf so that her niece had an entire set. As with the beret, Sandie used a worsted weight yarn; pictured above is the set that she knit using 3 skeins of Knit Picks Brava. And shown below is a great photo that Sandie snapped of the set being worn by her friend from her sewing club in Pennsylvania:

So cute, right?? And here’s the best part – Sandie is graciously sharing the pattern with all of us! Below, you’ll find all the instructions you need to make your own Annecy Scarf. So break out those knitting needles, and cast on for a scarf for yourself or someone you love; it will definitely kick off a fun knitting new year!

Annecy Scarf

Finished Dimensions: approximately 72″ long and 6″ wide

You’ll need:
Approximately 400 yards of any worsted weight yarn (e.g., Knit Picks Brava Worsted)
US7 (4.5 mm) needles, circular or straight

Gauge: 4 stitches and 5.5 rows = 1 inch in 2-row scarf pattern on US7 needles

Instructions:
Cast on 33 stitches using your preferred cast on method.
Knit 4 rows.

Begin scarf pattern:
Row 1 (RS): K3, yo, k2, k2tog, k2, yo, k2, k2tog, k7, ssk, k2, yo, k2, ssk, k2, yo, k3.
Row 2 (WS): (K3, p12) twice, k3.

These two rows form the pattern. Continue in pattern until scarf measures approximately 72″.

Knit 4 rows.
Bind off loosely. Weave in ends. Steam or block to finished dimensions.
